Promoting athletics has never been a priority at GW. Now that the local newspaper is dead, you’d think they’d try to focus efforts on social media more. They don’t. With respect but with vigorous opposition, this is a sentiment, i.e., athletics not a priority, from one who does not understand or value that academics should be the highest priority and that all other activities are to be viewed as tangential and extracurricular. Universities, and especially Christian liberal arts universities, are not to be prioritized falsely as sports factories or places one gets a degree in order to merely get one a job, but rather they are to be valued as an individual's quest to learn accumulated human wisdom through study of literature, philosophy, and other gifts to civilization, to develop critical thinking skills, and to hone communication acumen by speaking, writing, and leading. Please do not promote in this forum the very limited role of sports should have to usurp the role of academics a university plays in a learned society.

With all due respect to the previous poster Athletics is a vital part and lifeblood of the University. Over 60 percent of the students on campus are athletes. If that goes away enrolment drops and GWU will likely close their doors. Athletics and academics have always been a symbiotic relationship. One does not usurp the other. The more attractive we can make GWU to prospective students in this competitive market, the better. That can be through either academics or athletics. It does not matter, but in today's climate to exclude either side from the equation is asinine.
Oh and lest you think I am biased toward athletics, I came to GWU on a full ACADEMIC Scholarship, turning down similar offers from Duke UNC and South Carolina among others. I was a member of Student Government, The Speach and Debate Team, The Quiz Bowl Team the Honors Program, the English Honors Society and I graduated with honors with a GPA well above a 3. I was also in the stands in body paint for every football and basketball games, so as you can clearly see, I know about the balance between athletics and academics. I wish you did as well.

Athletics is particularly important at a place like Gardner-Webb. And it needs to be funded more robustly. Cuts would bury it the school quickly. Look at it as a marketing expense for the school. It’s a budgetary loss. There isn’t an instant ROI, but the exposure generated by a successful athletics program, specifically football and men’s basketball, is unmatched by any other entity on campus. Nevermind the exceptional rise in alumni enthusiasm.
When your campus population makeup has leaned heavily (60%+) with athletes for the majority of the school’s existence, it is obvious just how important athletics is to Gardner-Webb.

Never said anything about the expense of promotion. It should not cost much to have a student or intern be able to update a Twitter feed or Facebook/Instagram page with up to date information, especially during signing periods, etc. Look at my posting history. You aren’t going to find a bigger backer of faculty and staff than myself and if you knew me, you’d know exactly why.

How many starters from the 2023 GWU team are committed to returning, and who? Looking at the last depth chart online from the playoff game, and twitter portal declarations, there are two starters returning. One on offense (Chance Reid) and one on defense (Brandon Wilson). Looks like there should/could be as many as five second stringers returning. So plenty of playing time available for the newcomers. And the younger reserves who remain. Have to look at it as a positive. Recruit with opportunity and build a depth chart this spring. It’s college football in this era.

Added a quality RB from Temple over the weekend it looks like. Starter there. All Conference in 2022. Also, an all-everything OL from SC; another huge, decorated OL from NC; a massive TE from GA transferring from Chattanoga; a big TE transferring from Tiffin; a Top 100 D2 WR transferring from Tiffin. This team will be good.
