It's about time to hold open tryouts for kicker. This kid is garbage. He Has missed a fg in every game so far.

Complete snowball effect tonight after getting that 14-13 lead early in the 3rd. Injuries are piling up, and youth is showing. Rally the troops and get ready for a huge crowd for Charlotte Saturday, a Charlotte team that lost to CSU today in OT.

Probably the most head-scratching thing about this kicker is that we had ample forewarning that a leg was going to be a priority for this recruiting class, and we came up with a zero. Mystifying.
Last night was a complete collapse of almost all systems as soon as we went up 14-13 as '94 stated, Citadel set a school record with 10 sacks. It was ugly.

A real head scratcher. This was the same kind of epic melt down that we experienced at Charlotte last year. Will we come out this week and lay an egg like we did against VMI last year? Let's hope that we can rally the troops and come out in front of a big crowd on Saturday and get back on track.

Kickers are funny creatures. The young man has a pretty strong leg but his accuracy has been slightly off leading up to the Citadel game (i.e. hitting the upright or just wide) but it would appear that his confidence is now lagging. Don't know what can be done to fix it but hopefully someone does.
The bigger concern for me is the rash of injuries this season. I know it's part of the game and next man up, etc. but this is approaching ridiculous. We had 7 returning starters coming back on defense from a team that ranked 5th nationally last year but only two or maybe three I believe in O.J. Mau, Bradley Taylor and Ivan Toomer started Saturday night. The O-line after losing only one to graduation and with an experienced player in David Sutton to plug in has seen a rash of injuries that has cost us time at RT, C and LT. Throw in our starting RB on Saturday and we were missing 3 Pre-Season All Conference Performers in Tanner Burch, Chad Geter and Juanne Blount. If the injury bug keeps coming up, we may need open tryouts for more than just a kicker. 10 sacks is ridiculous but not surprising give the OL and RB injuries and a total absence of a run game vs Citadel. The guys we are plugging in for those injured are young but let's hope they grow up in a hurry. There's still time to get it fixed with 2 non-conference games left before conference but Coastal, CSU and Liberty are looking pretty strong right now.

He isn't performing like it, but lets not act like the staff is trotting out a walk-on. Its no different than having to count on a frosh at any other position. They often don't perform very well when cast into the fray immediately.

With the great characteristics of our coaching staff and the strengths of the entire staff in so many phases of the game, does anyone know whether our Special Teams Coordinator Brett Hickman has any specific experience, training, etc. that would help him evaluate our kickers to see if there are technical corrections to be made in their kicking activities? Brett does a solid job with our RB's. It does seem a odd combination for coaching assignments to have the RB Coach also the be the Special Teams Coordinator. It that repeated often at other FCS programs? Special teams is such a big part of the game and our kick coverage and kick return game has been pretty solid. I noticed in listening to the game Saturday night that a switch was made at punter as well.

We spent a scholarship to make field goals in 2014! You are crippling our options when we are 0-6 outside 29 yards. Maybe we should make listening to Pacino's mot. speech mandatory ( see thread on this subject ). We are banged-up and very thin in critical areas on both sides of the ball. Seems that we ran out of gas in the second half trying to defend the triple option.I have no doubt that our coaching staff will have a very competitive product out there Sat. vs. UNCC. We've played a tough group of teams to this point, and a bye week coming up may be just in time to heal up a bit.

Its more strange to me he's coaching offense. Most of his background was on defense but he's young and versatile. He's a really, really good Special Teams Coordinator. We had one of the most successful units in the country while he did it at NGU. Set all kinds of punt coverage and punt return records. Isaiah Johnson scored 8 punt return touchdowns and set the D2 record. I'm not sure what the coverage and return units were like before he arrived, but I'm sure they are as good as anyone you guys play. As far as coaching kickers, he did a good job. They are different. For instance, the kid he recruited at North Greenville, Justin Gravely is now a Division II All-American candidate. He struggled as a freshmen too. I wouldn't read anything into a kid missing FG's as coaching. It just happens.

Thanks to nguvolunteercoach for the background on Coach Hickman. I want to be clear that I wasn't looking to disparage Coach Hickman in anyway. We here at GWEbb have also seen a huge turn around in kick return and kick coverage play thanks to Coach Hickman as Special Teams Coordinator. My real focus was whether Coach Hickman had specific experience, training, etc. to be able to identify if there were any technique issues for our Placekicker that could be corrected. It may well be that the kicker is just in a slump or has lost some confidence. Those things can happen at any position on the field but the kicker fairly or not is pretty much on a island out on the field, make em you're the hero, miss em you're the goat. Kickers in my opinion appear to have trouble getting back on the right track when they get off track while in season. Each miss, the pressure builds and builds to make the next one and that pressure get's in the way of success. I wish the young man the best in getting out of this slump, it will be good for him but more importantly great for our Running Bulldogs. With our injury situation and strength of our conference foes, we have little room for error for the balance of the season.

With our injury situation and strength of our conference foes, we have little room for error for the balance of the season. I'm pretty sure in addition to being a high school quarterback for his dad (who is as good of a high school coach as you'll find) he also handled kicking or punting duties. I could be wrong on that. He always spent a great amount of time before and after practice with all of our specialist. Especially our snappers and holders. I still hear him say "Operation is the key to execution" every time we were slow. He is very, very detailed.
I do know we had major issues in 2010 due to our kicker quitting in July. We made it through with a soccer player and then in 2011 thru now we've been pretty fortunate with two guys Brett recruited out of the upstate that he kicked as Freshmen on our playoff squad in 2011. They got through the rigors and still handle all of the duties at NGU this season as seniors.

You guys are very fortunate to have that staff. I really enjoyed being around Coach Mccray our year together. First class person who I am sure will do great things up at GWU. It just sounds like a rough patch of injuries from what I've gathered reading the boards and the stats.
