I think the ACC is in trouble in the next few years unless Notre Dame joins the Conference but that's just an opinion!!!

FCS football will eventually die I'm afraid. These big paydays FCS schools are getting from Power Five schools will be history at some point, and that is when the decline will start. FCS schools will have to decide to either move up to non-P5 FBS or drop to D2.

I think FCS Football is dying for sure I hate it but it almost seems as if there maybe only 1 league your either P5 or non P5!!! I don't know that for sure but it feels like it!!!

I wish I could find the article I have been trying to find it but there was an article somewhere talking about a non P5 merger with the FCS in the future I'm not sure that would work but it would be interesting to see

FCS schools will have to decide to either move up to non-P5 FBS or drop to D2. I'm not convinced that FCS football will die off. Too many good programs that will continue to play football. FCS may look different in 5-10 years than it does now. Probably a revamped FCS. But I'm not convinced FCS goes away just because of what's happening at the P5 level. I think several FCS schools will likely move up to a re-engineered G5, and at that point FCS will be revamped somewhat. What I am convinced of is this: the Big South has no future, and we better find a new home ASAP. The way I see it is that neither the SoCon nor the CAA will take us. The CAA is already too saturated and the SoCon doesn't want us. The ASUN is a flash in the pan in my opinion, and probably won't survive the next couple of years, unless the Southland or the OVC falls completely apart, which isn't likely at this point. As I see it, we have 2 choices: 1) petition the OVC for membership, or 2) drop back down to D2. We aren't going back to D2, so I hope we are smart and proactive and sell ourselves to the OVC now.

I'm not saying I disagree, but what leads you to think that the OVC is necessarily more stable than the Big South? What's to stop a few conferences--say, the Big South, OVC, ASUN--from falling apart, their teams then realigning in new, geographically sensible ways (since TV revenue is not a determining factor at our level)?

That's a good question, and I don't know the answer. I can't say that the OVC is more stable. I can say that the Big South is very precarious at this point. Once NC A&T leaves, we have us and CSU and Campbell down here and RMU and Bryant up there. It's just sad in my opinion. Who would the BS add to expand?
Maybe we should petition the ASUN instead of the OVC. I don't know. I just don't see a very good future in the BS.
Then again, maybe we should drop back to D2. We've been playing D1 ball now for a little over 20 years, we've never been to the FCS playoffs, we haven't won the BS since 2003, we've barely had 3 winning seasons since the mid-2000s (6-5 in 06, 6-5 in 09, 7-5 in 13), and we only average a little over 4000 for home games. Hey, I'm new to this forum, and I'm sure I might get ripped a new one for saying all this. I don't want to drop back down, but maybe that's the best path financially and practically.

Your opinion is welcome, and at least as well informed as my own.
I'd hate to see us drop to DII, but I could accept DI non-scholarship football, with a home in the Pioneer League, for instance. At least that conference includes a handful of solid schools.
My sense, though, is that President Downs is pushing for deeper investment in sports, football not least among them. He clearly sees them as an effective way to promote the school.

Pioneer League - I forgot about those guys. Yes, I agree that would be a better landing spot for us than D2. Much better.

The ASUN would be interesting but in the PFL we would not have to worry about as many costs maybe as we do where we currently are but I don't know if that's necessarily true either!!!
