A comparable comparison between Central Prison and Gardner-Webb would be one of equal parity of G-W in the early 70's . Someone should write a book about the hypocrisy of some of the staff back then with their long hair rules, etc. . If you're not aware of all the shenanigans that happened back then, one should inquire of those of us that had to endure such characters as Martin Banner, the Dean of Men at the time. He actually told me with a straight face that " If your hair touches your collar, you're going to hell, " to which I replied, " Have you ever seen a picture of Jesus with a crew cut ? " I honestly thought we were going to exchange blows that day, and I still have occasional dreams of him and his band of loyal " Christian " hypocrites. Around 1974 the whole bunch of them were terminated and the reasons behind the terminations are mind boggling.

Ok, since you are from that era, I'd love to hear about the whole Johnny Cash day, honorary degree, etc. if you were around for it.
Of course, in my day, we had a blatant racist named E. Jerome Scott, a dean, who always was on the ass of any white male that came into the cafeteria with a cap on to take it off, all the while letting his "boys" come and go as they pleased. Just a real prick.

I did attend the Johnny Cash Day event in the football stadium, the home side then being the current visitor's side. Mister Cash and the stage were set up on the east side of the stadium, the end where the field house is located. I don't remember too much about the occasion except that it was a warm, Spring day, but I was so over the Gardner- Webb " experience " at the time, I was paying more attention to the warm day and the coeds than the actual ceremony . I wasn't the only one that was " over " the Gardner- Webb experience , with lots of students planning their transfer plans for the next Fall semester. Gardner-Webb had an excellent basketball program back then, led by coach Eddie Holbrook and featured Kings Mountain's George Adams, and in the 1971-72 the Bulldogs won a spot in the NAIA tourney which was played in Hutchinson, Kansas. Gardner-Webb was in District 26 and their main rivals were Guilford College and Barber-Scotia. In the '72-'73 season, Guilford College , led by Lloyd ( later changing his name to World B. ) Free and M.L. Carr, two future NBA stars, won the NAIA championship. Our main extracurricular activities were going to the river or venturing to Gaffney to enjoy a few ice cold beverages. There was a hotel in downtown Gaffney, an extremely old hotel, that had a mucho fun bar on the bottom floor, but I have no idea what the name of the place was, but it had a great juke box and some of the Limestone cuties would venture in from time to time. Martin Banner and his squad of goons would walk around campus and if you had a hair touching your collar, would sashay up to you and make it a point to assign you an appointment in Banner's office the following morning to discuss what a sinner you were for having " long " hair. I still follow G-W's athletic programs, but haven't been to Boiling Springs in years, and have no immediate plans to do so. From one to ten, ten being the best, I'd give my Gardner-Webb journey a one, but I"m really not sure how it garners a number that high. On a more positive note, I was shocked, surprised, and a bit proud when G-W went Division I. Because of all the ridiculous rules, regulations, the overall attitude of some of the staff, and the allegations against some of G-W's " finest Christians, " they relaxed the hair rule for the men and other prison like regulations, mainly because they were outdated and students were avoiding Gardner-Webb like a dose of clap. That being typed, I so hope the Dogs can beat Radford tomorrow and participate in The Dance.

Dear BD the 5th,
You will be pleased to know that as a parent, I found G-Webb to be a fairly quiet, friendly campus, with no sitings of young men being led away to an off-campus barber shop. Surely things have changed, and GW will continue to have to find ways to stay 'relevant' in an ever more connected, hyper-change society.

I was there in 2008, and besides the new student center, why would I be shocked ?
