Well, I was up and getting ready and unfortunately got that call and had to go work for several hours. Come on somebody, what did we see?

It was good to see a fullback and tailback in the backfield at the same time. I loved the misdirection play action then bootleg pass to the TE. Coach Dickerson let his coaches coach but was never too far away to correct mistakes.

Practice tempo was much improved over last season's Spring Practices, the coaches were coaching hard and letting the guys know when they screwed up as well as when they did good.
Puzzling mix at the OL so far with the move of J. Dunaway to left guard from left tackle where he's been a two time all conference performer in his first two seasons for the Running Bulldogs. Harrison Martin is slotted in at left tackle right now, RFR Tyler Hough-Jenkins at Center, Z. Welch at RG and RFR D. McConnell at RT. One would think that by the time we get into the season that Jenkins will have to put on some weight to get above 250 lbs if he's to stay at Center. Jr. Austin Sargent at 6'-3", 295 is a solid talent at center who just needs to get some reps, RSO Jeff Harris 6'-2", 280 will push for time at either of the guard spots and J. Dunaway should find his way back to LT. S. Demilio is coming off of shoulder surgery but should push for the RT spot.
Our interior DL after M. Goodes lacks the kind of size and depth needed to hold up over a long season against big power OL's so hopefully our recruiting class will find someone capable of coming in and being an immediate contributor at DT. It was good to see last year's Big South Pre-Season DEF POY Marty Patterson back on the field after missing all of last season. Marty has been shifted to inside LB so it will be interesting to see how he adjusts from his past strong side OLB spot.
As Silvercat stated, it was awfully good to see a big bruising FB in several of the offensive sets. Kenny Little at RB looked solid also after missing most of last season and coming off of shoulder surgery. At the QB spot, Chandler Browning looks the most solid to me. It was pretty windy so the passing game was limited to some degree. Will be interesting to see how much improvement happens over the coming week.

I also made the short trip to GW to watch the RBs get in a little practice on Saturday. It was a beautiful but windy day. I stopped by the Tailgate Stop to make sure nothing had changed and was surprised at the level of activity that had occurred since last season. Here is the view from under the Oak Tree. I agree with Eagle's assessment of the practice. Very intense with a bit of confusion as both sides of the ball learn their new schemes. Coaches were well organized and the practice moved along quickly and was more in keeping with what I have seen at larger FBS schools. None of the coaches were just standing around watching things. All of them were actively involved and trying to motivate the boys. I was intrigued by the move of Jamie Dunaway to L. Guard. The old coaches tried this last season and found that Dunaway had to be at L. Tackle because he was the most effective at that spot. Jamie was used to pull to the R. side to help make a good hole for the RB and he did a great job doing that. Here's a series of pics to show the technique. In the 1st pic, it looks like Marty Patterson [welcome back Marty!] is going to have an easy tackle. You can see Jamie moving behind the center in this pic. You also see the FB [#45] keeping the OLB in check. In this pic, Jamie has taken Patterson out of the picture and Kenny Little [#6] now has room to run. He would have had more if the FB had stuck his block. As the play develops further, you see how effective Jamie's block was at opening the hole. Now, Kenny Little is one on one with a DB and he is likely to win that battle more often than not. [That's Coach Ledford in the red shorts coaching the linemen up.] Coach Dickerson and Coach Secord observe practice with the QBs. Enjoyed watching the O work from the 5 yd line and seeing them push the ball hard. With the QB under center, he had to option to hand off or pass and they practiced both possibilities. Coach Dickerson offered some positive encouragement at the end of practice. If you're interested, I posted some more pics at www.slickpic.com/album/GardnerWebbSpringPractice#Go Runnin' Bulldogs!

Well, not sure exactly is going on but Jamie not at tackle. Who did they have hid in the closet that is taking his place. Maybe they are just tinkering. They know he can play tackle so lets see what other folks can do.

Talked to Jamie earlier and he said that the practice Saturday will be the most physical yet. Whole practice will be a scrimmage. He is also very excited about the new offense.
