Maybe some of the alums can help me with this one but would Coastal ranked at #2 in one of the main FCS polls be the highest ranked opponent that GW has hosted in Spangler Stadium or was App. State ranked #1 several years ago when they came to Boiling Springs? Regardless, the Dawgs should look at this game as one great opportunity to shock the Big South, FCS and Coastal too. To be clear, GW will enter as very heavy underdogs and rightfully so given Coastal's recent success and record and with the Dawgs coming off a woeful offensive performance. With that said, there is absolutely no reason for the Dawgs not to play loose and play to win by throwing the entire playbook in every phases of the game at the Chants. Should they have a shot late in the game then game pressure may certainly impact Coastal in such a way as for the Dawgs to pull one big upset. No one gives them a chance, but each snap there will be 11 vs 11 on the field and it's those players who have the final say. I do believe those who attend or watch the game on ASN will see a few surprise wrinkles in this one.
Go Dawgs.

Remember it well -This was the coming of age game for Armanti Edwards. GW had 3 - 0 lead and Edwards a freshman in his 2nd game played - was inserted into the game and I believe the final score was 41 - 3 App St. I told my wife - an App St grad who was at the game with me they had something special. He was! App was ranked but I do not think it was #1.

Appy came in #2 in that 2006 game you reference, highest ranked opponent closest to that was Furman at #4 when they came in and throttled us 38-6 in 2004.
Coastal is good no doubt, but their ranking is helped by not playing any FBS level opponent this season. I guess you can do that when you have a multi-millionaire HC picking up any financial shortfall.

EagleDawg: If it is a close game late, I don't think that will phase CCU. We went to 2OT against Furman at their place. We have blown out some opponents, but it isn't as if we haven't been tested in the first 8 games.
1994: That seems to be the go-to comment for the uninformed. We don't play FBS schools anymore (as of this year) because it isn't worth it with the risk of injury vs the amount of money you get paid. And I don't believe Coach Moglia can re-allocate his money to the school since he is a current employee - that is some sort of NCAA violation.

bodoyle - There doesn't appear to be much that fazes the Chants these days. While any Running Bulldog fan would be super excited to pull the upset, there is much that has to go the Bulldogs way for that to happen. Players and coaches make things happen in both good and bad ways. The Dawgs need an excellent performance and need some help from the Chants for the upset to happen. I'm betting that the line has to be around 21+ or so. Our Dawgs are banged up with 50% of our starting LB tandem out for the year, 40% of our starting OL out with injury and our starting RB playing at less than 100% due to recent knee surgery. I don't know how many trick plays or new wrinkles will come out this week but we need to see some and have them work. I'm not certain that trying to play the Chants straight up will yield a good result. Strange things can happen in the college game though so throw in home field, maybe some quirky weather and a few favorable bounces of the ball and maybe the Dawgs make a game out of it. CCU has a solid shot to run the table and for the Big South, it would be great to see them win out, be seeded no lower than 2nd and get to the National Championship Game but football success is measured each week so don't get caught looking ahead or discounting the opposition.

So, you aren't going to be a part of the rotation that the Gamecocks have in the state of SC (FU, Wofford, etc.)? We have South Alabama next year and Ohio U. the following for a couple of decent paydays. I'm sure Moglia has hedge funds that he could funnel money into whatever he wanted if need be. I don't think your overall athletic program is cash-strapped. Like LU, your coffers are full.

He has used his connections to get us nice donations - like the $5 million donation from TD Bank over the next 5 years ($1 million/yr), but he hasn't done anything. He talked about reallocating his salary to his assistants, but then said he cannot do that since Mark Richt (UGA) did that a few years ago, and was cited with an NCAA violation.

Coastal should be ecstatic with what they have in Moglia. Not because of his wealth, but because he's a great manager of people. They've looked like a different team since he's taken over. I'm optimistic about the job McCray is doing, but we don't have the resources that Coastal and Liberty have and never will. That's a sad fact of life. Our reasonable goal should be to be the best of the rest and occasionally slip up and beat one of the two and win a title every decade. That seems realistic. I don't expect it to start on Saturday.

This guest is one I could not agree with more. I'll add that looking past this tilt with CCU, I'm not too sure how we're going to fare in Charleston the week after. Those will have been three tough weekends of football in a row, that's a fact. On the longer-term optimistic side, the American Sports Network deal is a big one for the Conference as well as the individual institutions. Coastal live at Gardner-Webb in my living room is a great thing ( even tho I'll be at the game...DVRs are also a great thing).

I think you're just upset that you guys barely scraped by VMI in double OT, and then got held to -17 rushing yards against Liberty. "Prick Karma," indeed.

This is my first time to Spangler Stadium. Is there any info you can give such as.... best way in, parking/tailgating, etc.?

Judging by the film I watched of their game against Wofford, parking will not be a problem. I think the stadium might have been half full at best. I assume they will have a bigger crowd for us, but who knows.

Personally, I'm pulling for Gardner Webb to turn their team around next season. You guys briefly cracked the top 25 last season and I don't see why GW can't be a solid team each year. Having said that, I mainly hope this because I hate Liberty and CSU is a joke (#wheelhammer). Gardner Webb has rarely beaten us, which also contributes to my feelings of benevolence. While I enjoy the Big South title usually coming down to our game with Liberty, it's more fun watching them squirm against other teams in the conference.
