Chris Lang - Beat reporter for Liberty makes this prediction for our game with PC. While I disagree with his prediction, I don't necessarily disagree with his assessment of our defensive problems. Here's hoping we make some adjustments on Saturday and prove Mr. Lang wrong.
PRESBYTERIAN COLLEGE 38, Gardner-Webb 14 Not only will PC win this game, it will be a rout. I came away last week stunned at how undisciplined GWU is on defense, and not from a personal foul or penalty standpoint. The Bulldogs were easily baited by play-action. They didn't stick to their defensive assignments. They pile up tackles for loss, but they also give up way too many big plays. PC is a clear cut above the rest of the jetsam at the bottom of the league this year, and the Blue Hose will show it at home.

Well, I wonder how practice is going. I do hope we can get the little kinks that pop up and bite us anytime fixed. I know the talent is there across the board. We can do this.. Lets go Dawgs!!

Well, here's hoping that we can improve our overall passing game and defense against the passing game. When reviewing this week's game notes against PC a couple of things jump right out at me. First and foremost, in our five games, we have managed to reasonably control the clock on offense and hold a time of possession advantage over 4 of our 5 opponents. This suggests a decent running game thanks to our OL, FB and TE blocking and running backs Kenny Little and Ricky Rhodes. We only had 2 three and outs last week against Liberty which which continues to improve against quality foes Ohio, WF, Samford and the Flames. We have produced as many big plays on offense this year thru 5 games (i.e. greater than 20 yds) than in the entire season last year. Unfortunately our defense has given up more big plays than we have gained and versus what the Defense did all of last season. Our turnover margin is +1 believe it or not. If we can get the passing game going better and find a way to score once we get inside the 30 and our defense can get off the field on 3rd down and avoid giving up big plays, I believe our efforts will be rewarded. You can do it Dawgs, let's get it started this Saturday against the Hose.

You can do it Dawgs, let's get it started this Saturday against the Hose. Eagle Dawg, and to all of you in concert: I agree that our passing game must improve to sustain drives and get into the end zone. At the very least, an improved passing game should prove beneficial in the battle for field position. Although I admit that I have not crunched the numbers relative to respective field positions, i.e. us vs. them, at the start of drives, it certainly seems we are losing that important battle in the "chess game on grass" we call football. Too many times it seems that our lack of offensive productivity has given our opponent a "short field" from which to work, compared to the "long field" our offense often encounters. In some respects, this "long field" is a by-product, not of defensive ineptitude, but rather a result of offensive inadequacies in the passing game. In other words, the offense can only blame itself, in most cases, for the long field on which it too often must begin drives. While it may be true that our offense is winning the battle for "time of possession", "control(ing) the clock" is not necessarily something to be proud of when your not punching the ball into the end zone, and your opponent is. "(C)ontrol(ing) the clock" is a good thing when you have the lead, or if a victory is at least still managable, but it can be a bad thing when you are behind; you do not score as a result; and valuable minutes are wasted. I cannot help but believe that much of our "clock control" has come at a time when we were behind; should have been throwing; and, therefore, playing to a defense geared toward defending the pass, with little concern for the minutes ticking away. For me "time of possession" does not "suggest a decent running game", but rather suggests, for the most part, eating clock against a team that prefers that you do just that, and is willing to let you do so. I do agree that scoring "inside the 30" is important, just as scoring inside the red zone is a must if we are to be successful. Unfortunately, scoring "inside the 30" would have done little to change the outcome of the last four (4) contests and, therefore, getting "our defense...off the field". I think all of us would, or should agree, that to score "inside the 30", or inside the red zone, requires as a prerequisite, and at the very least, actually getting inside the 30, (or inside the red zone). The simple truth is that in five (5) games our offense has found itself "inside the 30" only 14 times, and the red zone only 11 times. With the exception of the game against Brevard, (7 appearances inside the 30, and 6 inside the redzone), our offense has managed only 7 "inside the 30" situations, and only 5 red zone appearances in the last 4 games. While I do not profess to be a mathematician, a cursory review of our margin of defeat, from a scoring standpoint, demonstrates that if we had scored a touchdown on every appearance inside the 30 in the last 4 games, (even tacking on 2 pt. conversions), we would have still gone down to defeat by a wide margin, (inside 30 appearances against OU-1; WF-1; Samford-2; Liberty-3). Our lack of success, therefore, cannot be attributed to lack of scoring on that part of the field, but rather, our inability to even get there. Yogi Berra once said, "Baseball is 90% mental and the other half physical". Like baseball, football has its mental and physical components. While I cannot speak for the defense, I cannot help but feel the frustration, in fact the fatigue, they each must feel each time they take the field and try to stop, or actually stop, the opposition, yet look up at the scoreboard and see little, or no points from the offense for their efforts. It has to be demoralizing, and I would be willing to bet that in the defensive huddle the thought must occur from time to time that if GWU is to win someone in that huddle will need to score. Eagle Dawg, I do not know whether your statement is true, that GWU has "produced as many big plays on offense this year thru 5 games...than in the entire season last year" I will defer to you on that, and invite you to produce statistical evidence to support your statement. What I do know is that such a statistic is so unimportant in the scheme of things that it goes unreported in the vast clearinghouse of statistical data. I suppose if it is a "silver lining" you are looking for, and assuming it is true, I will concede the point. What I will not concede, however, (even if your statement is true), is that points, not long plays "greater than 20 yds", must be scored to win football games, or at least to remain competitive. At least last year in the first 5 games the team did just that, and right now, from an offensive standpoint, the score is GWU-2010-101 and GWU 2011-59. Just as importantly, GWU-2010 was in every game. Put simply, given the points scored in the last 4 games, and with all due respect, GWU 2011 would struggle against the Detroit Tigers, but luckily its only the 5th inning. Go Runnin Bulldogs!

Just as importantly, GWU-2010 was in every game. Not at Liberty or Stony Brook, at all. We have plenty of talent on the offensive side of the ball. Even with a freshman QB, that should be translating into points at some point soon, hopefully starting this afternoon in Clinton.

Garddawg fair enough rebuttal but all stats referenced in my post came from the gamenotes on the gdubb website. Yess, i am looking for a silver lining and i sure as hell haven't given up hope. I'm a football dad and i know what my son has done, does and will continue to do to strap up each week and try and be part of a team victory. Kenny little ranks 2nd in conference and 22nd nationally in his rush yds and ypc. Rb's don't typically have that success without good run blocking. Our defense has been decent on 1st and 2nd down but has given up big plays on third down. Last week, the offense took the field for their 1st play down 14-0. There are reasons we are 1-4 and there is plenty of frustration to go around. The team can have success by each group, o, d and special teams improve on what they are not doing well and continue to do well what they are doing well. Nuff said, go dawgs.

Proud Alumnus: You should have quoted the entire paragraph from which you conveniently extracted one sentence from which to support your post. At the very least you should have read it. My reference was obviously referring to the first 5 games of 2010 not the entire season. Context can be everything. Get back to me when this season is over and we can compare notes for the entire seasons of both 2010 and 2011. That is obviously what you would like to do.

Another bitter disappointment at PC yesterday. The offense gets into the endzone twice, tallies more total yards, is about equal in total first downs, special teams blocks a punt and defense forces a fumble but we still lose by 2 TD's. Turnovers were the story with 2 int's and 2 fumbles. Going into the game the Dawgs were plus 1 in the TO category but exit the game minus 2. The int's at least one was due to the QB getting his just as he released the ball and the 2nd was a throw that not many QB's at any level can make a deep out from the far hash mark. The two fumbles came at the end of positive yardage plays which killed momentum. Even sure handed Tre Perry dropped a long one albeit while looking back into the sun with 4 steps on his defender and an open field to the endzone. As I told Tre after the game, even Micheal Jordon missed a shot every once in awhile. The football god's are not being friendly to G-Dubb right now. The defense while surrendering far fewer points than the past 2 games still had difficulty at times getting off the field even when having the opponent in 3rd and long. You could visibly see the frustration of the players, coaches and fans as solid work on 1st and 2nd down was wasted on several possessions. On the positive side, the Defense surrendered far fewer total yards, far fewer points and the offense tallied more total yards, had only one 3 and out and actually drove the ball over 70 yards for one of the TD's. R-Fr QB Lucas Beatty appeared more confident and comfortable making several key throws and completions. James Perry was outstanding with 7 catches for 140 yds although I know it hurt him to miss the big one that was a likely TD. He won't miss many like that going forward and will continue to add to his Big South record breaking total receptions.
At 1-5 overall and 0-2 in conference, the Dawgs have 5 games to continue to work and improve and learn what it takes to win. It's important for the balance of this season and ones that follow that this team, players and coaches keep working, develop some confidence and see some success. I believe that there is no quit in this bunch but they are hurting. If they weren't hurting I would be worried. You kick a Dawg that's down long enough, he will rise up and bite your ass. When he does, the Dawg will feel better and so will the rest of us.

GWU v. The Blue Hose: It was good to see the Runnin Bulldogs still competitive and still in the game Saturday in the 4th quarter. That alone should be encouraging to the citizens of the Bulldog Nation and to its soldiers alike. The difference in the outcome could be attributed, for the most part, to the four turnovers, and of course, the blocked field goal early on did not help. Not many teams will overcome four turnovers and win the game, especially turnovers at the end of positive plays that kill drives, and more importantly the valuable momentum which was just starting to build. Even a team with a 4-1 record would have found it difficult to overcome that many turnovers, even at home, let alone a 1-4 team on the road and at an opponent's homecoming no less. To be sure this team is hungry for a win and I believe that many, if not most, of the turnovers were the result of players simply trying to do too much in an effort to make a great play out of an already good play. Not tasting a victory in so long will sometimes bring that out in a true competitor. I think both sides of the ball have something to build on after Saturday. To be sure, next week will be a tough matchup, and although a win would be nice, I for one would count a competitive and improved showing from last week a victory.

Well guys, I stayed home saturday. Yes it was as close a game to home as I would ever see, but it was on local TV and I wanted to watch the game on TV. We should have won that game. I see all the stat talk and all that stuff but bottom line is we are still having the same problems.1. pass coverage, especially on 3rd and long. Thier guys were wide open.2. passing game on offense. It seems to take forever for the routes to be run and there is hardly no seperation. That was better Saturday for sure, but still took way to long to get the routes run and the QB to release the ball. I believe Luke has done a good job for his first two starts. But it is consistantly the same things. Why, I dont know,Im not that smart and dont get to study film. BUt, there is a reason and we need to find it to finalize this. Defense,we continuosly have 3rd and long and give up long passes, and the guys are wide open. Now Im not blaming anyone. New system, new coaches etc, but something is being missed. BUt Im telling ya, we should have won that game saturday, we gave it away, they did not beat us,so yes, thats a positive.Stop mistakes,we got this guys!!!
