The leadership at GWU is going to have to do something we can't stay in this conference but I know the conversation and debate have been about where we go and what the right fit for GWU is in conference realignment. I don't have any answers but man I feel like the school at this point has to make some sort of move towards another Conference!!!

We've got to hope we make the correct AD hire to try and force our way into the SOCON. We are paying dearly for having an empty suit as AD for the past decade plus.

“…force our way into the SOCON”? Not sure what you mean. How would we “force” our way into the SOCON?

“…force our way into the SOCON”? Not sure what you mean. How would we “force” our way into the SOCON? "Force" may have been the wrong term. "Sell GW" would be more accurate. Burch couldn't sell a life vest to a drowning man.

I agree with the idea of "selling" the GW brand to the SOCON, etc. The problem at the moment is that, in the eyes of the SOCON, we have nothing to sell them that benefits them other than geographical location. If location is such a hot commodity, seems they would have invited Kennesaw and/or NC A&T. Or even Coastal back in the day. [On a side note and IMO, we do have a good basketball program that would fit in with the SOCON. But I think it will take more than that.]
If we want to get into the SOCON, what we need to offer them as a small private university is a WINNING football program. By "winning" I mean a "consistent winner". With the BS at death's door, we need to not only join a conference where we can compete and win (OVC), but invest the money necessary to build the program into a bona fide winner. If we could get into the OVC - which would more likely than the SOCON invite us at the current moment - and spend a few seasons winning that conference (or at the very least, contending to win that conference), then the SOCON would likely begin to see us as SOCON material. [We don't need to necessarily leave the BS to join the OVC, but join them as a football affiliate member. The OVC needs football members.]
Personally, I think the SOCON is playing a waiting game to see if the CAA can actually exist long-term at its enlarged size (especially the southern half), or to see if the ASUN actually survives at all. If either does not, the SOCON is in a position to swoop in and pick up the pieces they would want, if any.

Hard to argue with dawg86. I do think we bring something to the table in basketball, but not so much that the SoCon will be seriously tempted. We have to change the culture in football, and that will mean stringing together solid seasons--and investing, conspicuously, in athletics. I do think the Downs has something like that in mind. It's clear that he wants to build pride in the school and sees sports as an obvious way to do it while also gaining the right sort of attention.
