Former GWU one-and-out-coach.
Southern Mississippi has hired veteran defensive coordinator Ellis Johnson to take over its football program.
Johnson, 59, has spent the past four years as defensive coordinator at South Carolina and has been defensive coordinator at Mississippi State and Southern Miss. He also has been a head coach at Gardner-Webb (1983) and The Citadel (2001-03).
Johnson replaces Larry Fedora, who left Southern Miss for North Carolina. Johnson said he won't coach the No.9 Gamecocks on Jan.2 when they face Nebraska in the Capital One Bowl.
