More likely a realization (athletics) that GWU is not growing its undergrad population, and, therefore, cannot sustain the move to D1. I believe all sports move to D2, or football is dropped entirely, replaced by men's lacrosse. One of those 2 will be the Athletic Dep't 'contribution' to the budget-cutting process. D1 sports programs, at least in the eyes of the Trustees and Committees, are not providing the needed ROI, period.

Well, Brevard dropped all the way down to D-3, so there is your nearest precedent geographically to refer to.
A drop to D2 I could see, completely mothballing football I can't see.

As far as athletics is concerned this kind of thing seems like it will either be big news (drop to D2 or remove football) or no news. Can't imagine anything in the middle.

It is slick and quite dirty to slip an announcement like this out into the public eye with break this week.

Either one would be tragic. I hope the powers that be realize how important D1 sports are. A drop to D2 would be catastrophic

That's the situation in a nutshell. GWU CANNOT trim their athletic budget any meaningful amount and remain in D1. We are barely hanging on operationally in almost all sports, not to mention the overall edministration. I have to agree with the above poster, how would it be such a catastophic event to re-align to D2??? Sure, basketball would be a tough pill to swallow, but I don't think many would care about who we played in most other sports, inc. football. Sure, the regular posters here care passionately, but the greater GW community would get along just fine in a solid D2 conference for most sports. Might actually feel good to field competitive programs in for a change. Fun, not compromised struggle.

If any of you haven't figured it out in the link I sent you, the term 'strategic plan' was highlighted....here is the other link for the detailed plan....note that much is said about everything, but athletics seems to get the least mentioned here, and no foreseeable improvement on Porter Arena either, even though the Big South came down with their arena mandate awhile ago..... gardner-webb.edu/about/who-we-are/strategic-plan/index

A tip for you all.....don't believe a word of those two fluff pieces from the Shelby Star I posted. Let's just say the financial situation is far from as rosy as depicted, I could elaborate further, but don't want to get anyone in hot water.
We are now reaping the reward of the flat out lie back in 2002 that G-W would conduct a "nationwide search" for a new President after the whole White mess, only to hire his right-hand man in true good ole boy fashion. It's time for Bonner to go and to bring in someone with zero connection to G-W to right the ship. If our Board Of Trustees has any backbone or balls, they would force Bonner to accept a severance package first.

Since it's been awhile since I posted as a supporter of Gardner Webb Football and Basketball I thought I would add an opinion! Recently I stumbled across this forum seeing how I read a lot of posts on here and thought to myself this is a mistake! Gardner Webb needs to stay and strike a competitive balance in the Big South Conference and D1 in Football and Basketball both. We can compete in the Big South Conference in Football and Basketball. Going D2 or D3 isn't the solution to this it's staying and competing wether in the FCS in Football or D1 in Basketball!
