We all know we have the following games out of conference:
Wake Forest Ohio U. Brevard Samford
Add in anything you hear on this thread. I'll be interested to see who our fifth home game will be against, assuming the Samford game is on the road.

Here's hoping our new coach sees no value in playing D-II schools.

At Coach Dickerson's presser today, I heard that we are trying to hit a home and home game with another FCS school but that is proving to be an exceptionally difficult task. The 5th home game may be filled with another D-II team which would just be a shame in my book.

We should be able to get a home/home with at least a SWAC or MEAC opponent, or even Savannah State, at least they aren't classified as D-2.

For some it may make more sense to play a local team D2 (i.e. Brevard, Carson Newman, Mars Hill, etc...) to get the local crowd to come out and it brings back rivalries from back in the day with the South Atlantic Conference, rather than playing some team no one has heard of in the MEAC or the SWAC. People are not going to recognize teams from the conferences and so they are not going to come out for these games. Whereas you say GWU is playing Carson Newman and you will have a lot of people come out.
If we are going to schedule D1AA teams out of conference, we need to stick to the likes of Furman, Woffod, App, JMU (CAA conference)
I think we need to get away from games like Tennesse Tech and Sam Houston State. I guess the benefit of playing teams like this is for recruiting purposes!?!? If it is just to schedule a game, then No one cares!!
Just a thought!

I'm not sure the numbers add up though. We had 4500 at the Brevard game and 5500 at the Mars Hill game. I'm sure the game against Southern Virginia was even worse. People just don't want to watch us play these D-II games and our players don't want to play these games. We need a true rival program. Something with an annual contest that we know up front we are going to play and with a trophy to the winning team. I've heard it's Coastal Carolina, but that game doesn't feel like a rivalry game to me. I would love to see our athletic department work to develop a rivalry tradition with UNC-C or some other appropriate team. I know it's difficult to do this, but I think the outcome will be worth the effort. Put this in the FWIW column, but, I think I'd rather see us pursue a second big money game away rather than play a 2nd D-II team at home. However, with our new coach coming in, I suspect that 2011is going to be a pretty good attendance year. Go Runnin' Bulldogs!

If we are going to schedule a D-2 cupcake, it sure as heck isn't going to be against Carson-Newman. Go ask Chattanooga how that worked out for them.
Sam Houston was an interesting home/home against a team with some FCS tradition. Getting a home/home with a CAA team like JMU, W&M, etc. would be good. I'd like to see us play an Ivy League team someday as well, even if not a home/home. Imagine G-W playing at the Yale Bowl or Franklin Field...that would be neat.

G-W should focus on annual non-conference DI-AA rivalries such as Wofford, Furman, SC State, App State, Elon, NC A&T, Western Carolina, Davidson, and Campbell. These home and home games would put people in the seats and provide local rivalries (all these DI-AA schools are from NC or SC). I know Davidson and Campbell are non-scholarship, but they are DI. If G-W can win against these teams on a regular basis, then the national recognition will to Boiling Springs.

I think Davidson and Campbell are I-AA in basketball only. D-II in football.

Ithink a good school to schedule would be UNC PEMBROKE.In 4 years they came from nothing to playoffs and national ranking. Will probably be moving up to D1A soon as D2 schools really don't want to play them. They beat Carson Newman at their place by thirty points. All NC kids with more and more Charlotte kids every year.

No offense, but I don't think or boys have any desire to play a Peach Belt Conference school [D-II]. In order for GW to be competitive in the Big South, we have to play teams that will challenge our team. A loss to Pembroke [which I don't think would happen] would be devastating to our program. Until the Big South gets more football teams, we must be more aggressive in scheduling home and home contests with quality D-IAA programs. Furman is traveling to Coastal this fall and there is no reason they shouldn't be willing to come to GW. Wofford is a 20 minutes trip. Elon isn't so far away. It is clear that the schedule has to be worked harder so that our team can improve.

Wofford should be a yearly game with the proximity, especially now since the tension of the late 80's/early 90's is gone.
Furman can easily come back on the schedule as well, Patton cried like a baby after they whipped us and refused to play them again, which was asinine.
MEAC alternatives like SC State and NC A&T wouldn't be bad either, and they all travel well.
It would be a no-brainer at this point with Campbell joining the Big South for the conference to go hard after Mercer. Yes, both schools will or currently play non-scholly, but if they ever decide to go scholly football, it would boost the conference, especially since we know Stony Brook's contract runs out soon, and Liberty could bolt for greener pastures virtually anytime.

There is one thing the GW faithful fail to realize is that the program is still a weak D1A program that has a long way to go.Missed the boat on good recruiting in one of the top talent years in NC. Great coaching move but he will be saddled by missing out on good recruits.Scheduling top D1a programs for the next couple of years only guarantees more losing seasons.Ask WC about D2 Tusculum hanging 50 on them last year.I know where the program wants to go but it has a long way to go.Be realistic who GW can play with. Don't go the way of WC recruiting mostly out of towners that can't win.
